When the Sony PRS-T1 was released last year, one of the big hyping factors was the ability to download millions of free books via Google Books. The Sony Wireless Reader or the Sony PRS-T1 had the ability to download books both in Canada and the USA. This is no longer the case and the button to download Google Books has been disabled.

Google recently changed Google Books and integrated them into the Google Play platform. This messed up the infrastructure on the Sony PRS-T1, and now the store points to invalid links and you no longer can download free books. The message users are receiving says: “Google Books are no longer available via Reader Store.” This problem is also affecting the iRiver Story HD, which relied on Google Books as the sole means to get new content.

So who is to blame for the inability to download free books from Google Books on the Sony PRS-T1? Basically, this is all on Sony to incorporate the changing landscape of technology with their e-readers. Although Google Books is known as Google Play Books, there are ways to get it working on the device, and Sony has not bothered to do it. Google Play Books is available on the iPad and Android, but not on the flagship Sony Reader Wireless.

Rumors of a new, smaller iPad continue to surface, with the latest report claiming Apple is preparing to launch a 7-inch tablet this October with 8 gigabytes of storage for less than $250.

The new iPad could cost as little as $200, according to iMore, which cited a "reliable" source. If Apple were to hit the $200 mark, it would compete more directly with Amazon's $199 Kindle Fire, but such a price would make it near impossible for Apple to achieve the same margins it does with the rest of its product lineup.

The source of Thursday's rumor did correctly pinpoint the March 7 date for Apple's new iPad unveiling before the event was announced by the company, and it also accurately predicted that the third-generation iPad would feature high-speed 4G LTE connectivity. The site also claimed in March that Apple's next iPhone will arrive this fall with 4G LTE and a 3.5-inch screen.

The latest rumor comes on the heels of another report from the Far East issued earlier this week, which claimed that Apple plans to launch a smaller, 7-inch iPad even sooner, in August of this year.

Though the report identified a smaller iPad as a 7-inch model, iMore wouldn't commit to that size, saying it was using the number "generically." Other reports have given a more specific size of 7.85 inches, or nearly two inches smaller than the current 9.7-inch iPad.

Such a device has been rumored to have a screen resolution of 1,024 by 768 pixels, which is the same resolution as the first-generation iPad and the iPad 2. That would allow current applications written for the iPad to run on a new, smaller device without any modifications.

But in addition to lowering margins, a highly aggressive sub-$250 price point for a new 8-gigabyte iPad would undercut the prices of most of Apple's iPod touch lineup, which sells for $299 with 32 gigabytes of capacity and $399 with 64 gigabytes.

As for fending off the Kindle Fire, recent data suggests Amazon's $199 tablet has failed to maintain momentum following the holiday shopping season. IDC reported earlier this month that shipments of the Kindle Fire saw a "steep drop" in the first quarter of 2012, dropping from a 16.8 share of shipments in the fourth quarter of 2011 to just 4 percent in the first three months of 2012.

Bookeen is proud to present the Cybook Odyssey: the first e-Reader equipped with High Speed Ink System (HSIS) technology. It has taken two years of development to create this technology which will revolutionize the electronic ink display. With the HSIS, the Cybook Odyssey paves the way for a new generation of e-Readers which are faster, more reactive and more fluid.

The launch of the Cybook Odyssey is set to dispel all previous misconceptions about electronic ink. Until now, the quality and comfort of electronic ink have enabled e-Readers to provide the ideal reading device for digital content. However, in recent years, the inertia of the e-paper technology has disappointed readers who are used to highly reactive touch-screen LCD tablets or smartphones.

Now with the launch

of the Cybook Odyssey equipped with HSIS technology, Bookeen reveals the first ever e-Reader which works at high speed whilst also maintaining the properties of electronic ink.

With the HSIS, Bookeen:

has radically simplified the e-Reader user experience by making it more intuitive,

has crafted a user friendly interface directly inspired by the ergonomic of touch-screen tablets,

introduces a range of new features which have not yet been available with electronic ink.

The Cybook Odyssey will be available in Europe in the forthcoming weeks. The price has not yet been disclosed.

The Cybook Odyssey is the first e-Reader to incorporate:

the technology of a High Speed Ink System (HSIS) developed by Bookeen, for an instantly reactive screen which has never previously been achieved with E Ink®

The Cybook Odyssey is also equipped with the following features:

a Cortex A8 processor (800MHz) adapted by Texas Instruments in collaboration with Bookeen,

a 6 inch E Ink® Pearl wide touch-screen embedded in a compact classy design,

Sydney. October 2011 – M-Edge Accessories, the market leading designer of accessories for tablets and e-readers, today unveils the SuperShell for iPad 2, a shock-absorbent foam frame that wraps around the device and prevents damage from drops and rough play. Available at Best Buy and medgestore.com, the SuperShell is ideal for home and classroom settings, as well as industries where the iPad 2 is at risk, including construction sites, hospitals, and sporting events.

The SuperShell is made with ultra-protective closed-cell foam that wraps securely around the iPad 2. The rear-facing camera and speaker are both accessible, with push buttons for volume and power control. The finely dimpled texture and ridges create a comfortable, ergonomic grip for hands of all sizes. High-impact corners provide maximum protection, absorbing shocks if dropped and allowing the iPad to bounce to safety completely unharmed. The SuperShell is currently available in the kid-friendly, comic book-inspired color Atomic Green.

M-Edge CTO Adam Ashley says, "The idea for the SuperShell came from a real-life experience when a friend told me the story of his 3-year-old son breaking his iPad's screen after dropping it on the ground. We wanted to solve a common parenting dilemma: how can I allow my child to play games and educational apps on my iPad while ensuring the device's safety? The SuperShell acknowledges that children are frequent iPad users and still allows kids to be kids! Rough play is okay and even encouraged with the SuperShell. It gives parents peace of mind and protects their investment at the same time."

At just $29.99, the SuperShell is an affordable insurance policy for parents used to babysitting their expensive tablet.
Price and design are the two biggest factors driving the e-reader market; and in the past, Sony severely dragged its feet on the former. But today the company has rectified the situation with the introduction of the newest Sony Reader Wi-Fi PRS-T1. With a list price of $149, the reader costs 35 percent less than the Touch Edition model it replaces. In addition to the dramatic price drop, Sony has shaved weight off the design to make it, by a hair, the lightest e-reader on the market; and it has consolidated its lineup from three models to just one.

Sony's Reader lineup was in dire need of a shakeup. The company's prices on the three models introduced around this time last year were grossly out-of-whack with the reality of reduced e-reader pricing over the past year, which occurred in response to Amazon's pricing of the Kindle. And the consolidation of the lineup from 5-inch, 6-inch, and 7-inch models to a single 6-inch model makes sense: The 5-inch display was less about anyone clamoring for a smaller screen than it was about hitting a price point, while the larger 7-inch display cost more and became an outlier because of that.

The moves were also necessary. Early in the summer, both Barnes & Noble and Kobo Books released significant, lightweight e-reader refreshes that were priced to compete with Amazon's dominant third-generation Kindle, even as Amazon lowered its pricing via its Kindle With Special Offers on-unit advertising.

Sony has partnered with J.K. Rowling for her upcoming Pottermore website, which will be the only place where you can get Harry Potter digital books. And in a move sure to drum up interest among Potter fans, Sony also will offer a special model of the PRS-T1, the PRS-T1HBC, with a free download voucher for the first Harry Potter ebook title, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Sony hasn't indicated whether the T1HBC would carry premium pricing, nor has it said where that model will be sold.

Using the PRS-T1

The new Reader Wi-Fi weighs 5.9 ounces--which makes it more than an ounce lighter than Kobo's eReader Wi-Fi (7.05 ounces), Barnes & Nobles' Nook (7.48 ounces), and Amazon's Kindle 3 Wi-Fi (8.4 ounces) and 3G (8.7 ounces). The Reader Wi-Fi's reduced weight is a noteworthy improvement, considering that even last year's Sony Reader Pocket Edition PRS-350 (which had a 5-inch E Ink screen) weighed 5.6 ounces.

The case design is smooth, with piano-black plastic edges; a soft, rubberized finish along its curves and edges; an angled-in 0.5-inch bezel; and metal accents on the front that complement the display. The interface is cleaner-looking, too, with better-designed menus and icons and easier navigation than on previous models.

Touch Interface and Display

Comparison chart: How does the Sony Reader match up against its peers?Like its most recent predecessors, the Sony Reader Wi-Fi has a touchscreen. Inputting data was easy with the onscreen keyboard, and the test unit I tried was very responsive. Not only does Reader Wi-Fi support swiping for turning a page, but it adds gestures like pinch-and-grab for zooming in and resizing (you also have eight font sizes and six font styles), a convenient addition for manipulating text on the screen. Other gestures include tap-and-hold on a word to look up a definition in one of the 12 on-board dictionaries (including two British and American dictionaries, and 10 translation dictionaries to go to and from French, German, Spanish, Dutch and Italian). You can also take notes or highlight text easily, using either your finger or the included stylus. The Reader Wi-Fi supports EPUB, PDF, and TXT files.

Text looked smooth and clear in the early test unit I saw, but Sony was still working on the page-turn technology, so I can't comment on that yet. The button layout remains intact from the 2010 Reader Pocket Edition/Reader Touch Edition generation, with physical page forward, page back, home, back, and menu buttons running in a row beneath the 6-inch E Ink Pearl display. Along the bottom you'll find a micro-USB port, a headphone jack, and the power connection; a microSD card slot is hidden beneath a sturdy, snap-in rubberized flap. The unit has 2GB of built-in storage, just as the Nook does.

Sony says that the battery will last about 30 days, or three weeks with wireless on, between charges. That's the weakest battery life in the Reader Wi-Fi's competitive set among E Ink readers, which makes me wonder whether the company sacrificed some battery life to achieve the Reader's lighter weight. The Kobo eReader Wi-Fi, the next-lightest e-reader, has about a one-month battery life, while the Barnes & Noble Nook and the Amazon Kindle each deliver a battery life of up to two months.

State of Sony Reader

As part of his update on the state of Sony's Reader efforts, Phil Lubell, vice president of the Networked Technology and Services Division at Sony Electronics, noted that the company continues to invest in Reader hardware, and in its Reader store, which now carries more than 2.5 million titles, a "good number"” of which are free. The Reader store will also feature heavily in Sony's coming Android tablet efforts, with Reader coming preinstalled on the Sony S1 tablet.

In addition, the Reader platform differentiates itself by supporting the public library system's e-book lending, with over 11,000 libraries on-board. The new Reader Wi-Fi is the first to support direct downloads from the public library to the device, and Reader continues to strengthen its position there.

Unlike their predecessors, which Amazon will continue to sell (for now), none of the new models have a physical keyboard.

Of the three, the Touch is best dressed for success in a highly competitive e-reader market, which also includes devices from Barnes & Noble, Kobo, and Sony.

(I should point out that the Kindle prices quoted above are for the "Special Offers" versions of Amazon's e-readers. In other words, customers get a price cut in exchange for enduring screen ads when the Kindle is idle. The Kindle Touch without Special Offers is $40 more at $139.)

Success in the Middle

The Touch should sell well for several reasons. Its $99 price brings the Kindle into impulse-buy territory. It may become a popular stocking stuffer this holiday season, assuming shoppers can buy a unit in time. Amazon will start shipping the Touch on November 21.

The $79 Kindle may cost less, but I believe the Touch will sell better. The main reason is the latter's multi-touch display, which should prove more intuitive and appealing than the cheaper model's 5-way controller. The Touch is slightly heavier, but only by 1.5 ounces--not enough to matter.

Other advantages: the Touch promises 2 months of battery life--twice that of the $79 Kindle. It has 4GB of storage, enough for 3,000 books. The cheaper model has 2GB for 1,400 tomes.

Honestly, I can't imagine the average user storing hundreds (or thousands) of books on an e-reader, but the added storage is probably a strong selling point.

At the high end, the $149 Kindle 3G (or $189 without Special Offers), is priced too closely to the much-flashier Kindle Fire--videos, apps, games, color display, etc.--to appeal to folks who want a basic e-reader.

Don't Forget the Nook

Of course, my Amazon-centric comparisons don’t take into account the upcoming moves by Amazon's e-reading competitors, a key consideration that Gartner analyst Allen Weiner discusses in a Sept. 28blog post:

"As Gartner has predicted, the price point for e-ink readers would fall below $100 in time for the holiday shopping season. What remains to be seen is whether Amazon will be alone in that distinction or whether B&N, Kobo and Sony--whose new Pearl screen, WiFi device has yet to hit the market--will follow suit. The thinking is price cuts will be fairly dramatic market wide in Q4 along with perhaps some innovative campaigns which include product or service bundles."

It wouldn't be a shocker if Barnes & Noble, which is rumored to unveil a next-generation Nook Color device in the very near future, either lowers the price of its $139 Nook to $99, or introduces a new E-Ink model at a sub-$100 price point.
